“Explorations in Oil and Cold Wax” works by Kaaren Marquez Viewpoints Gallery is thrilled to present “Explorations in Oil & Cold Wax”, a stunning new collection of paintings by Mountain View artist, Kaaren Marquez. Blending cold wax medium with oil paint allows Kaaren to apply thin layers of varying shapes, colors, and textures, creating new energy and mystery in every piece. Abandoning the brush for brayers and squeegees, Kaaren uses expressive marks, vivid colors, and dynamic lighting to create emotional impact. From a distance, Kaaren’s striking compositions invite viewers to look more closely, then reveal beautiful subtle details upon closer inspection. Her subjects range from landscapes to figures, yet she always celebrates and emphasizes nature’s grandeur and tranquility. Kaaren describes the exciting evolution of her art practice over the past year, “This has been a year of exploration for me – travelling through New Zealand and learning new art techniques in Mexico. My paintings usually start with multiple abstract layers. Inspired by the resulting shapes or colors, I begin to overlay representational imagery, scraping or scratching back to retain some of the abstraction and complexity along the way. It is always an adventure!” This collection is a testament to Kaaren’s skillful mastery of the oil and cold wax medium, and to her ability to infuse each piece with the powerful emotions she feels for her subjects. Working out of her home studio, Kaaren has been painting professionally for the past sixteen years. She graduated from Stanford and pursued a successful engineering career with HP and Agilent before embarking on her art career. Her award winning work has been juried into many local, national, and international shows, including the Triton Museum of Art’s current exhibition in Santa Clara. Her work is shown at Viewpoints Gallery in Los Altos, Gallery 24 in Los Gatos, and Lisa Lisa Hair Salon in Los Altos. Kaaren is also president of Allied Artists West, a professional artist association. Her paintings are in private collections throughout the world.
