Enjoying the Outdoors: The Basics of Over Night Camping


Area 17 Saturday, May 2, 1 pm –Sunday, May 3, 10 am This program is for those who wish to learn about hiking, camping and cooking outdoors without leaving a trace. Staying overnight is not required, but recommended. $10 per person, ($2 off with Colonial PA Plantation admission). Persons not staying overnight and children under 8 must leave the park by 10 pm. Agenda: First we'll have a hamburger and hot dog lunch. Then we'll learn about outdoor gear, front country etiquette, setting up a campsite, cooking and fire safety. After we've set up our campsite we will use mountain man recipes to prepare family-style meals and a Dutch oven dessert. After dinner we will go on an evening hike, sit around the fire, make S'mores and hot chocolate. Breakfast is a surprise mountain man delicacy, but for those a little less adventurous, pastries will be available. We'll have coffee, juice and milk to drink. WHAT TO BRING: your own camping gear/tent (some loaner tents will be available with reservation), water bottles, flatware, binoculars (loaner binoculars will be available), camera, a reliable flashlight/lantern per person, a mug, marshmallow roasting stick, chair/blankets and personal items. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. If you have special dietary restrictions please bring your own food. Cookware, plates, cooking utensils, food, recipes will be provided. Participants should be able to hike 1-1.5 miles on rugged trails. Meet at the playground in Area 17. Registration is required and participation is limited to 12. This event will cancel in the event of heavy rain, lightening or high winds. Please call 610-892-3908 and listen to message regarding cancellation if bad weather is predicted. On your way into the park Saturday or home Sunday stop by the Colonial PA Plantation in Area 4 and watch the Reenactment of the Revolutionary War.
