Elsa Howell - Traditional Appalachian Ballads

What could be better than listening to traditional Appalachian ballads on a late October evening? What are Appalachian ballads? They are haunting story-songs that trace their roots to the English, Scottish, and Scots-Irish traditions carried into the mountains by early settlers. Passed down orally for generations, these songs blend Old World tales of love, betrayal, and tragedy with New World stories of mining disasters, train wrecks, and local legends. Preserved in the relative isolation of the Appalachian Mountains, they form a vital link between European folk traditions and the birth of American country and folk music. With a voice that's clear as a bell, yet strong and compelling, Elsa Howell is a tradition bearer in the truest sense of the term. Raised in a musical family in Southwest Virginia, her voice and attention to musical detail have won her ribbons at folk song competitions in the mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia, and slots at some of the most prestigious folk festivals in the country. She is swiftly developing a following and raising renewed interest in the traditional music of Appalachia, as well as writing her own songs and poetry. Elsa blends her traditional background with a love for poetry and old country music, and she has been highly praised for her strong, clear voice and confident delivery. She has been featured at the Richmond Folk Festival, The Mid Mountain Festival in Natural Bridge, The Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D. C. While her focus is on traditional music, she also performs her own original songs. Elsa will be accompanied by her parents, Isak and Chris Howell. Isak, plays banjo, guitar, harmonica, and more. Their set will feature him playing several different unique instruments, such as the shruti box and gourd banjo. Elsa’s mom, Chris will be on bass and sing harmony. 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm (Doors open at 7:00 pm) Tickets $12.00 in advance/$15.00 at the door. Refreshments will be available. (Advance Ticket Sales End at 11:00 pm, Friday, October 24.)
