El arte y la ciencia de los herbarios / The Art and Science of Herbaria
¡Descubre el arte y la ciencia de crear un herbario! Acompaña a la artista botánica Maria Lopez Vazquez en este taller práctico bilingüe, donde exploraremos cómo las colecciones de plantas nos ayudan a identificar especies y documentar el mundo natural.
Trabajando con plantas nativas, aprenderás a prensar un espécimen, prepararlo y acomodarlo para su montaje, identificar sus características principales y conservar información importante sobre tu hallazgo. También conoceremos la historia de los herbarios y por qué estas colecciones continúan siendo herramientas valiosas para la ciencia y la conservación.
Los especímenes de plantas nativas que se utilizarán en este taller serán recolectados previamente con el permiso correspondiente y específicamente para esta actividad. Los participantes no recolectarán plantas adicionales durante el taller.
Este taller es una de las varias actividades que se llevarán a cabo como parte de la celebración de la Semana de la Conservación Latina “Journey Through the Wetlands” y el inicio del Mes de Acción del Río Tijuana. ¡Ven a aprender una nueva habilidad, conectar con las plantas de nuestra región y descubrir la ciencia detrás de la preservación de especímenes botánicos!

Discover the art and science of creating a herbarium! Join plant artist Maria Lopez Vazquez for a bilingual hands-on workshop exploring how plant collections help us identify species and document the natural world.
Working with native plants, you’ll learn how to press a plant specimen, prepare and arrange it for mounting, identify key features, and preserve important information about your find. We’ll also explore the history of herbaria and why these collections continue to be valuable tools for science and conservation.
Native plant specimens for this workshop will be collected with prior permission specifically for this activity. Participants will not collect any additional plants during the workshop.
This workshop is one of several activities taking place as part of the Latino Conservation Week “Journey Through the Wetlands” celebration and the Tijuana River Action Month kickoff. Come learn a new skill, connect with the plants of our region, and discover the science behind preserving botanical specimens!
