Dickinson College to Host Lecture on Shifting Voting Patterns of Latinx Voters

The lecture, “Sueño Americano or Sueño Republicano? Latino Voters in 2020, 2022, and Beyond,” will take place on Tuesday, March 21, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium, 360 W. Louther St. The event is free and open to the public. Masks are optional but welcome. The lecture will be livestreamed, and the link is available at www.clarkeforum.org. In the 2020 presidential election, support for Joe Biden among Latina/o/x voters fell eight percentage points when compared to their support of Hilary Clinton in 2016, the highest loss of support out of any racial or ethnic group for the Democratic Party. In his talk, Fraga will describe research he and colleagues conducted on this trend. Using 2022 election data, voter records and national survey data, he will explain factors contributing to this shift and its potential impact on future elections. A scholar of American elections, Fraga is a professor of political science at Emory University. His research focuses on how racial and ethnic identities can influence political action, voter turnout, the impact of election laws and who wins political offices. In his 2018 book, “The Turnout Gap,” he analyzes the history of voter turnout of major racial groups in the U.S. since the 1800s. Fraga has been published in top research journals and has served as a consultant on numerous cases related to voting rights and as an advisor to civil organizations working to increase electoral engagement.
