Dia de Muertos

MéCACI empowers Mexican youth in Indiana through vibrant art and cultural events that celebrate and reinforce their cultural identity. Our goal is to connect young people with their heritage and foster their creativity. By building partnerships and engaging community support, we aim to enhance the impact of our programs and enrich our community. Highlights include: Tapete De Flores & Papel Picado: A visually stunning 1000 sq. ft. display created from marigolds in vibrant shades of yellow and orange. In addition, a 3000 piezas traditional Papel Picado display. Marigolds are symbolic of connecting with ancestors and honoring their lives, and papel picado serves as a colorful and meaningful trim. Community Altar: A beautifully crafted 30X15 ft. altar that represents the collective remembrance of departed loved ones. This activation offers an opportunity for all Hoosiers to reflect on and celebrate the lives of those who have passed, fostering community connection and understanding. Tasting of Pan de Muerto and Mexican Hot Chocolate: Enjoy Pan de Muerto, a traditional Mexican bread with rich, buttery flavor and symbolic decorations. This will be paired with authentic Mexican hot chocolate, made with high-quality cocoa, cinnamon, and vanilla, offering a delicious taste of Mexican tradition. Educational Short Film: A captivating short film providing an informative overview of Día de los Muertos, including its history, customs, and the meanings behind various traditions. Community Testimonials: Video testimonials from Mexican Hoosiers, including individuals who speak Indigenous languages such as Mayan and Zapotec. These testimonials will highlight the cultural diversity of Mexican society in Indiana, showcasing stories from first-generation to fifth-generation Mexicans. These testimonials aim to educate and inspire Hoosiers about Día de los Muertos traditions and the meaningful ways we honor and reflect on our loved ones. The entire event is free and takes place at the Indiana State Capitol Building from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 1, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on November 2, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on November 3., and is free to the public.
