The L.A.-via-Jersey guitarist born Steve Marion had no grand plan for making it: he would simply book time at a friend's studio and play, allowing intuition to guide him as he composed his jubilantly tuneful instrumentals while recording them. On Luke's Garage, Marion felt freer than ever to "keep the seams showing, and don't polish everything, and keep it raw, and alive, and electric-feeling." The album title pays tribute to his pal and sometime collaborator Luke Temple, while conjuring the anything-goes adolescent innocence of heading over to a buddy's house, turning up the amps, and creating your own world. Marion played every instrument himself—guitars, drums, keys, bass—creating a colorful playground for exploration that recalls Paul McCartney's early solo work. The album veers from shadowy synth-pop ("Light of the World") into candlelit soul ballads ("Shall Be Free"), from chugging garage-rockers to slinky disco ("There Goes My Baby"). ANDRÉ COSTELLO Fresh from his historic live-to-vinyl recording at The Sanctuary at Mr. Smalls in August, Pittsburgh singer-songwriter André Costello brings his new album Rocky Mountain Low to the Thunderbird stage. The record represents the culmination of a six-year creative partnership with producer Anthony LaMarca (The War on Drugs, The Building). "It's a document of survival, honestly. Of what remains after you tear everything down and rebuild," says Costello of the album, recorded at the legendary Peppermint Studios in Youngstown, Ohio—the historic facility known for capturing the first Grammy-winning polka recording. Blending influences from Neil Young, Wilco, Donovan, and Kurt Vile, Rocky Mountain Low embraces the imperfections and intimacy of recording. The title track offers a meditative response to John Denver's optimism, written during a solo trip to Colorado.
