Women in Delaware unite for “National Women’s Strike”, but set their eyes on changing state legislation. May 30, 2024 June 24th marks the second anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. A group of Delaware women and men have organized a local demonstration as a part of the “National Women’s Strike” in Wilmington. The group aims to unite the voices of women, raise money for charity, and push for legislative changes. Just two weeks ago, lead organizer, Tabitha, came across a social media post about a “National Women’s Strike”. Inspired by the post, she reached out through local social media, inquiring about Delaware’s participation in the national strike only to discover that nothing had been established. Feeling that she “needed to do something beyond sitting behind a screen and witnessing it”, a group of likeminded people came together—Delaware Women’s Strike & Empowerment was formed! Within a week, the group had their first meeting seated around a dining room table to start planning. Since then, the group has: established a social media presence on Facebook (Meta), Instagram, and Tik-Tok; partnered with local women-owned businesses; connected with supporting organizations across Delaware; found a location for the rally; and created merchandise to raise funds for the First State Abortion Fund and Planned Parenthood of DE. In addition, the group has started to craft their list of legislative demands for the rally. Improving the lives of women and their families (living in Delaware) is where the legislative demands will focus. Some of the requests include: equal pay, enshrining reproductive rights in the state constitution, and making housing and childcare more affordable. “The world needs less bystanders and more people willing to take action.” Tabitha Bendel How can you participate on June 24th: 1.
