Dedication of America 250! marker--First Step to Celebrating 250th Birthday of USA

Join the First Step to Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday Happy Birthday, America! We are ready to celebrate 250 years of a free nation By the people, For the people and Of the people. June 8th, 2024, at the Des Moines Woodland Cemetery the Abigail Adams Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Des Moines Parks and Recreation will gather to dedicate the local America 250! marker. You are invited to join us at 1:30 p.m. in the GAR section of the cemetery. Prior to the event, the Greater Des Moines Community Band will perform patriotic music and to begin the ceremony, the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) color guard will process with the flags. The event will also include: • A display of a large Betsy Ross American Flag behind the band. • The SAR color guard will be dressed in Revolutionary War uniforms. • A Quilt of Valor will cover the plaque before it is revealed. • Justin Alliss, a descendent of Revolutionary War General Samuel Z. Jones will be attending. America250! is a multi-year effort to commemorate the semi-quincentennial anniversary of the United States. The NSDAR was the first heritage society to formally partner with the event, asking state DAR societies and chapters to begin the celebration. As Iowa’s oldest DAR chapter at 130 years, Abigail Adams is proud to contribute this marker to honor our patriot ancestors. To learn more about the effort visit dar.org. This event is the first in Des Moines as we prepare to celebrate our nation’s special birthday. This plaque is one of hundreds that will be placed across America. For questions, please contact Luanne Baker, Abigail Adams Chapter Regent, at [email protected] or 515-360-2088. This colorful and picturesque event is planned for 30 minutes, and we welcome the media to join us to inform the community.
