David F. Walker: A Conversation about Comics and History

The graphic novelist will be joined in conversation by RIT professor and art critic, Daniel Worden. This program is brought to you by Western NY Comic Arts and the Rochester Indie Comics Expo.
David F. Walker has written some of the most iconic comics and graphic novels of the 21st century, including the sci-fi epic Bitter Root and the Eisner Award-winning Black Panther Party: A Graphic Novel History. Most recently, he has rewritten Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as Big Jim and the White Boy. Join this award-winning author in conversation with Daniel Worden (College of Art & Design, RIT) for a discussion about comics, race, and history.
David F. Walker is an award-winning comic book writer, author, filmmaker, journalist, educator, and leading scholar of African American cinema. His work in comic books includes Shaft, winner of the Glyph Award for Story of the Year; Power Man and Iron Fist, Nighthawk, Fury, Secret Wars: Battleworld, Cyborg, The Army of Dr. Moreau, and Number 13. He is also the creator of the critically-acclaimed YA series The Adventures of Darius Logan and the author of the Eisner-winning The Black Panther Party and Bitter Root.
Daniel Worden teaches and writes about American art, comics, print, and visual cultures. He is a Professor of Art at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He also curates exhibits at RIT’s Cary Graphic Arts Collection and is a founding Board Member of WNY Comic Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that organizes the annual Rochester Indie Comics Expo. In 2026, he received the Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching at RIT. He is the author of the Eisner-nominated Petrochemical Fantasies: The Art and Energy of American Comics, Neoliberal Nonfictions: The Documentary Aesthetic from Joan Didion to Jay-Z, and Masculine Style: The American West and Literary Modernism, which received the Thomas J. Lyon Book Award in Western American Literary and Cultural Studies.
