Darien, CT -- On Saturday, June 28th, Darien’s Cherry Lawn Community Gardens will be celebrating its 50th anniversary from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, with a rain date on Sunday, June 29th. The event is free. The gardens are located next to the playground at Cherry Lawn Park, 120 Brookside Road, Darien.
“We’ve planned activities focused on gardening and nature that will be both fun and informative for all ages. All the goings-on will be run by local organizations and volunteers from the garden,” said Dorothy Shergalis, President of the Cherry Lawn Gardens. “You can hear talks about dividing irises, beekeeping, backyard birds, and vegetable gardening.”
“There will be two scavenger hunts in the garden, and The Darien Swap Shop will be giving away specially chosen garden-related items,” notes Susan Cameron.
Other activities will include tables where you can: Plant sunflower seeds; make pressed-flower bookmarks or do painting projects; and meet animals from the Darien Nature Center.
Participating organizations include: Garden Club of Darien, Gardener’s Center, Darien Nature Center, Master Gardeners, Pink Rhubarb, Spout Chefs, Darien Arts Center, Mather Center, the Darien Museum, Darien Land Trust, Pollinator Pathway, and The Greenwich Dahlia Association.
The Cherry Lawn Community Gardens were established in 1975 by the Garden Club of Darien on property newly purchased by the Town. Residents can rent a 100 s. f. plot for the season from Darien Parks and Recreation. There are 60 plots in all. An all-volunteer committee of gardeners and the Town of Darien share the management of the gardens. There is a $30 annual fee to cover water, maintenance, and the purchase of shared tools and hoses. Currently, there is a waiting list for a garden.
“I have 30-plus years of wonderful memories from gardening there: the taste of home-grown veggies, especially tomatoes, and helping my parents in their garden. These special feelings bring me back to Cherry Lawn every spring,” said Ms. Shergalis. “I love that our community garden is all organic, brings together gardeners of all ages, and is protected by a 10-foot-high fence. It’s fascinating to see all the different vegetables, flowers, and herbs people grow.”
“We’re looking forward to sharing our enthusiasm for gardening with the people of Darien at this special event. Don’t miss it!” she added.
