In late May 1864, the Shelton House at Rural Plains Farm became a target during the Battle of Totopotomoy Creek. Two Union officers stood on the roof of the home, waving flags and sending messages as they directed fire into the Confederate lines. Who were these men and what did they experience while serving in the Signal Corps? How could a simple flag waving in the air send messages for miles? Join us as we explore Civil War communication and the Signal Corps with Park Ranger Candace Hart.
