Coventry Arts on Main
Historic Coventry Village will be transformed into an arena of creativity as Coventry celebrates its annual Arts on Main Day, Saturday August 29 from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. In addition to art vendors, art exhibits, children’s activities and food trucks, there will be a variety of musical, dance and spoken word entertainment. This event is free and open to the public. It showcases the visual and performing arts, brings public attention to the historic part of Main Street and supports the local business community. The Town of Coventry, along with the Coventry Arts Guild, Coventry CT Cares, and the First Congregational Church are a collaborative team planning this Day of Arts for the community.
The Coventry Arts Guild will host its Annual Members Art Show at the Booth & Dimock Library at 1134 Main St. The library will also feature the Modern Times Theatre, with puppetry performances throughout the afternoon. Visitors may also make their own puppets and help create the Arts Extravaganza!, an interactive art installation on the library lawn and an Arts on Main tradition.
Visitors may create chalk art up and down Main Street sidewalks and become art themselves at the facepainter! Artisans and craft vendors will have exhibits and wares for sale in the municipal parking lot at the 1153 Main location. Ice cream will be provided by the Joy Project.
American roots musical group Eight to the Bar be headlining the Main Stage at the First Congregational Church parking lot and will be preceded by two up and coming local youth bands.
At Mill Brook Place, there will be performances by the Can-Dance Studio, and local writers will share excerpts from their works, including one act plays and poetry. Members of the public are invited to join in.
Throughout the event, the First Congregational Church will be selling lunch fare, holding a craft fair in Johnson Hall, and a tag sale on the lower level. Coventry CT Cares will host Tacos La Rosa and Fizz’n Twist Sodas and will also be selling chrysanthemums in the church parking lot.
Further down Main Street, there will be entertainment for children (of all ages). An “Instrument Petting Zoo” coordinated by instructors and students from Coventry’s Song-a-Day Music Center, will be set up for guests to have an up-close look at and try out various musical instruments. Visitors will also have a chance to become part of a spontaneous “On the Spot”Jug Band sing-a-long, playing all kinds of rhythm instruments provided by the Music Center.
Main Street merchants and restaurants will be open, showcasing their specialties. The several antique and collectibles shops will be a particular draw. Outside Mill Brook Place, community organizations will be set up providing information on services they provide.
Parking will be available at the Captain Nathan Hale Middle School at 1776 Main Street and a shuttle bus will convey passengers to and from the event in the Village.
