Join us for a conversation with J. Tim Raymond, Pat Pendleton, and Dana Hatchett as they share their creative processes and discuss the often-overlooked question of titling artwork.
J. Tim Raymond favors the notion that “painting is the residue of perfection.” Pat Pendleton aligns with the idea that “painting is engagement with the continuous present.” Both reference Jasper Johns’ famous call to action: “Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.” Dana Hatchett will speak about his current collage practice, which draws from decades of abstract painting. His work repurposes cut pieces from earlier paintings into new forms full of contrast and variation.
The conversation will explore how titles emerge, whether from intuition, systems, or after the fact associations, and how different artists approach this part of their practice. Some title before they create, others afterward, while some choose to leave work untitled altogether. Come for the insights, stay for the conversation.
