Join Historical Nonfiction/Social History author Donya Williams, for the official release party of her new book Comes to The Light: Learning About the Entangled Families of Edgefield, South Carolina. Donya will talk about her journey in finding her family and how in that search she learned a portion of history that was never taught in school. There will be a meet and greet, an 'Ask the Author' segment and book signing.
The book covers genealogical research and family history, as well as politics, religion, southern American history, slavery, and what it is to be family. It also shares the personal journey of reconstructing a family tree disrupted and broken by 245 years of the American chattel slavery system.
Although Donya was not born in DC she has lived in the Washington DC area for 33 years. Her family was thought of as being a part of the Black Elite families during what Donya calls Washington DCs personal Harlem Renaissance era. She is the Granddaughter of Jefferson and Annie Mae Yeldell, who were founding members of Greater New Hope Baptist Church and Major founders of Springfield Baptist Church both located in Northwest, Washington.
