Drawing inspiration from the boundary-breaking legacies of movements like Fauvism, as well as several contemporary artists of color, these artists use color not only as a visual strategy but as a radical tool of identity, emotion, and defiance.
Like Amy Sherald and Kerry James Marshall, whose palettes reframe Black identity within art historical contexts, the featured artists reclaim space through intentional chromatic choices. Some paint the skin in unexpected hues, layering vibrant patterns, and disrupting expectations of realism. Their work echoes the emotional resonance of Rothko's color fields, the rebellious non-naturalism of the Fauves, and the culturally grounded figuration of Kolade Oshinowo and several others.
Whether through portraiture, abstraction, or installation, these artists push beyond traditional artistic and societal boundaries. Color Riot is not just an explosion of pigment; it is a declaration of presence, of selfhood, and of freedom. In a world that often imposes limits, this exhibition celebrates color as liberation.
