Clue (1985)
There’s kind of a lot going on in Clue. Certainly more than you’d expect from a movie based, rather faithfully, on an old board game. It’s a tightly scripted screwball comedy pulling from influences like Howard Hawks and the Marx Brothers. But like the game it’s also sort of an Agatha-Christie-style drawing room murder mystery, with each of the characters taking their turns playing (inept) detective and concealing their own motive. On top of all that it’s an ensemble piece — Madeline Kahn, Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd and a whole 1980s roll-call of funny character actors all show up. There’s even a story credit by John Landis!
Most famously there’s also the incredibly ambitious attempt at an interactive and multi-threaded series of endings that let the audience decide what happened and drove the movie from being a failure at the cinema to a cult success on TV. Turns out people were more frustrated with than fascinated by the experience of not seeing the same film as everyone else.
