Get ready for an unforgettable musical experience at the River Crossing Concerts' 2024 season opener: The French Connection. Join us on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at 4PM to witness the magic of Classic V Winds as they explore virtuosity, color, and humour in cultural snapshots from Cuba, France and the Americas. Whether you are a seasoned fan of classical music or simply curious to explore this captivating world, this event is perfect for you. Discover the incredible versatility and power of wind instruments as they fill the air with breathtaking melodies. Bring your family so your kids can explore wind instruments upclose as children's instrument petting zoo precedes the concert at 3PM. Meet the artists and fellow audience members at relaxed wine & cheese reception and walk out with a friend or two! Classic V Winds is a woodwind quintet comprised by the principal players of The New Jersey Wind Symphony. The ensemble offers fresh interpretations of the classic repertoire and is equally at home with bringing new repertoire to the concert hall. True to their mission, River Crossing Concerts continues to bring works of women composers. This concert celebrates works by Louise Farrenc (1804-1876), a French composer, who due to her gender, never got the recognition she deserved. A virtuoso pianist and the only female to teach at the Paris Conservatory in the 19th century her virtuosic woodwind sextet was the first work of this setting, later on explored her compatriot Francis Poulenc. The groundbreaking African-American flutist and composer, Valerie Coleman (b. 1970) has been named one of the 35 top women composers by the Washington Post composer, and is a winner of multiple awards and honors. Inspired by Ravel's work for violin and in the tradition of virtuoso string showpieces, Coleman’s Tzigane is a high-charged, passionate journey through woodwind virtuosity. In his Aires Tropicales, the legendary Cuban clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera takes us on a journey through sultry and rhythmical latin-american melodies, afrobeat and jazzy tunes. Fransic Poulenc’s Sextet wraps up the program with its humorous and sparkly melodies, catchy themes and French elegance. Don't miss this opportunity to witness the magic of the music! Mark your calendars and join us for an unforgettable musical journey that will leave you inspired and uplifted. See you there!
