Author Traci Huahn's picture book tells the true story of a fight for access to public education by an 8-year-old Chinese American girl, Mamie Tape, and her parents. There were no public schools for Chinese Americans in 1884 in San Francisco when Mamie tried to attend the white school and was turned away. That led her parents to go to court, first at the city level and then with the state. Victories were met with more setbacks. Young readers will realize that court rulings are just one part of any campaign for human rights. As part of CHSA's celebration of Women's History Month, join us for a family day featuring a special presentation with Traci Huahn along with interactive arts and crafts fun for the for kids and adults of all ages. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Traci Huahn writes books for kids and especially loves stories rooted in Asian American culture, history, and identity. Mamie Tape Fights to go to School is her debut picture book. As a former attorney, Bay Area local, and the daughter of Chinese immigrants, Traci feels a deep connection to Mamie’s story and hopes it will inspire young readers to become changemakers, even if it starts by taking just one small step.
