Chocolate and it’s Makers: A Chocolate Making Demonstration

Celebrate Black History Month with a fascinating exploration of chocolate’s global journey and its ties to Virginia’s colonial past. Join us at Historic Endview for Chocolate and Its Makers, a live demonstration and interpretive program that uncovers the complex history behind one of the world’s favorite treats. During this engaging program, visitors will: • Witness an eighteenth-century chocolate making demonstration and learn about the process from cacao bean to cup. • Discover the origins of chocolate, from its beginnings in the Americas to its adaptation by Europeans during the colonial period. • Explore the connections between chocolate and the Hampton Roads region, including the role of Virginia’s ports in York and Hampton. • Learn about the enslaved individuals who produced chocolate in eighteenth-century Virginia, such as Caesar of Stratford Hall, and their often-overlooked contributions to this industry. • Gain insight into ongoing research uncovering chocolate’s presence in Warwick County and surrounding areas. All Black History Month tours are included with general admission.
