Chiaroscuro: Singing Light into the Darkness
The EHJ Memorial Fund for Opera is pleased to announce the opening of our 38th Concert Season with “Chiaroscuro: Singing Light into the Darkness," featuring Karen D’Angelo, soprano, Michael Serio, piano, and special guest Nicholas Kleinhans, flautist. Featuring masterworks by Handel, Mozart, Fauré, and Donizetti… including Donizetti’s virtuosic 'Mad Scene' from "Lucia di Lammermoor" in the second half of the program.
“I designed the entire repertoire around the Mad Scene,” soprano Karen D’Angelo says. “Even though it’s a Mad Scene, Lucia sees so much light in the darkness. I wanted to show: in the first half of the concert, we have light and happy pieces, with birds and spring… but also sadness and darkness, too. It’s a balance.”
