"Chante la Vie, Chante," the Golden Age of French Song

A trio of distinguished French musicians will perform beloved chansons from 1950 to 1990, a period that represents an incomparable wealth of authors/composers/performers known throughout the world. “From the Left Bank cabarets to the rebel generation of the 1970s, la chanson tells the story of our country,” says director André Nerman, who also performs in the show. “In some cases, artists of genius with dramatic destinies have left a universal imprint on the entire world.” Audiences of all ages will enjoy this scintillating program representing France’s Golden Age of Song. Sponsored by Alliance Française de Buffalo and the UB Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. Performers' Bios Since 2001, André Nerman and the Caravague Company have organized tours of French presentations on the entire North American continent, including, most recently, his production of “Mad Men! Chez Molière” Oct. 13 at UB. These varied programs have encompassed the great classical and contemporary authors along with poetic or musical presentations such as “Jacques Brel or the Impossible Dream,” which played in Paris and around the world. As a musician, Nerman has worked with such renowned artists as Annie Cordy, Serge Gainsbourg, Gilbert Laffaille, Manon Landowski and Fugu Mango. He is well known to Paris audiences as an auteur/compositeur/interprète, and in 2021, he received the Gold Medal for Cultural Outreach from La Renaissance Française. Singer and vocal coach Daphné Rabas received her artistic training at the Conservatoire de Meudon and at Studio des variétés, where she studied jazz singing with Christiane Legrand (sister of Michel Legrand). She also studied musical comedy in New York. Rabas has appeared in the musical comedies “Barbe Bleue” in Paris and in “La belle et la bête” with Philippe Candeloro in an international tour. She has been a lead or back-up singer for many musical groups, and she was lead singer in her own show entitled “Starlight.” Rabas is also a composer, cabaret singer and dancer (both modern and hip-hop). For the past 30 years, Thierry Boulanger has been a pianist, composer, arranger and musical director based in Paris. He is currently musical director of Mel Brooks’ “Les Producteurs” (“The Producers”), a show that in 2022 received two “Molière Awards,” France’s national award for live theater. Recipient of the Prix Maurice Yvain in 2006, he has worked with such renowned artists as Natalie Dessay, Charles Aznavour, Michel Legrand, Roberto Alagna, Sylvie Joy, Kad Merad, Alex Lutz, Laurent Lafitte, Alexis Michalik and many other prominent figures in French theater and cinema.
