Celebrate Pi Day with Music, History, and Mathematics at the Historic Sydenstricker Schoolhouse

The Upper Pohick Community League invites the community to a unique afternoon blending history, music, and mathematics on Pi Day, Saturday, March 14, at 12:00 PM (Noon) at the Historic Sydenstricker Schoolhouse. This special event, featuring presentations on the educational and structural intersections of music and math, will be followed by a celebratory Pi Day pie social. The event features two distinct presentations: • “Music in the One-Room Schoolhouse and Beyond": James Lawrence, dedicated Schoolhouse intern and docent, will present his research on the vital role of music in early American education, featuring a special, live performance. • "Mathematics and Music": Dr. Ilhan Izmirli, esteemed professor from George Mason University, will present a fascinating lecture exploring the deep connections between mathematical theory and musical composition. Dr. Izmirli’s talk will delve into both the computational and artistic applications of math in music, ranging from basic arithmetic in tempo and meter to the use of the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci numbers in composition. The lecture will also cover advanced topics, including Fourier series in harmonics, logarithmic scales in tuning systems, and the application of abstract algebra in modern dodecaphonic compositions. The event will conclude with light refreshments, including a variety of homemade pies in honor of Pi Day (3.14). Admission: Free, Homemade pie will be served!
