CatchLight Focal Point Conversation Series - Debi Cornwall: Photographer Talk & Book Signing
During the event, Debi Cornwall will share insights into the making of her new book, “Model Citizens” (Radius Books, 2024), in which she examines the blurred lines between reality and imagination, questioning how staging, performance, and roleplay shape our understanding of citizenship in a violent land whose people no longer agree on what is true. With her striking, formally composed color documentary photographs, Cornwall’s work encourages us to reflect on the staging and normalization of state power.
Following the presentation, there will be a reception where Debi Cornwall will sign copies of her book. Copies will be available for purchase in advance with the event ticket or on the night. Makeda Best, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs at Oakland Museum of California, will make the opening remarks at the event.
Since 2019, the CatchLight Focal Point Conversation Series has gathered photographers, photojournalism patrons, collectors, and photo enthusiasts to explore one prominent photographer’s work in an intimate setting. After a series of exclusive events, the Focal Point Series will reopen to the public in 2024, continuing its tradition of insightful evenings exploring the powerful tool of visual storytelling in shaping public discourse.
