Carquinez Village Presents: Ten Signs of Parkinson’s Disease

Carquinez Village Speaker Series will discuss “Ten Signs of Parkinson’s Disease,” in a talk featuring Steve Sillen, a founding member of Carquinez Village. Sillen has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s for six years. He serves as an ambassador for the Parkinson’s Foundation and a presenter for the Parkinson’s Speech Project. The program will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, at the Benicia Public Library, 150 East L St. in Benicia. A 2022 Parkinson’s Foundation-backed study revealed that nearly 90,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the U.S. each year. This represents a steep 50% increase from the previously estimated rate of 60,000 diagnoses annually. Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder with symptoms that generally develop slowly over years. The progression of symptoms is often a bit different from one person to another due to the diversity of the disease. Sillen will present a slide show and speak from his experience in living with Parkinson’s. The program is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Decaf coffee and doughnuts will be provided. The Library’s Dona Benicia room has an Assistive Listening System. To get access to this system the city must be contacted in advance.
