Are you ready to put your green thumb to work? Come learn how to grow a habitat garden in your living space.
Twila Newey, a certified California naturalist and a member of California Native Plant Society, Willis Jepson Chapter, will be the featured speaker for the Carquinez Village Speaker Series at 10:30 am Thursday, June 18, 2024, at the Benicia Public Library, 150 East L St. in Benicia.
She’s been working intensively with native flora for the past four years, including an internship at The Watershed Nursery as well as an apprenticeship at Larner Seeds Demonstration Garden, where she was the head gardener for final six months. Newey also has a home habitat garden designed after the wild plant communities she has encountered on her extensive walks in the bay area.
Participants will learn why including regionally native California Native Plants in a garden, can be beautiful and use low/no summer water. It can support increased biodiversity, heal damaged soils, and help regenerate degraded suburban ecologies.
Newey will teach when to plant, how to water our native plants (not much!), as well as how to gather and clean some native wildflower seeds. Attendees will also receive a list of local, garden-friendly native plants, learn of nurseries where they can find those plants, and even get a packet of native wildflower seeds to get started (with the rains in fall/winter). The lessons apply whether a person is starting from scratch, wanting to add a few native plants to an existing garden, or has a few containers on an apartment balcony, they can make a big difference!
The program is free and open to the public. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Decaffeinated coffee and doughnuts will be available
The mission of the Carquinez Village is to help Benicia and Vallejo seniors to stay in their homes and to enrich their lives through connecting, supporting, and inspiring them.
