Bridging the Divide, Finding Common Ground

This broadcast event attempts to bridge the divide, helping us understand political polarization and articulate areas of agreement, even between those who have been on opposite sides of the aisle. Elected as a Republican, JB Van Hollen served as Wisconsin Attorney General from 2007 to 2015. During that same period, from 2000 to 2015, Mike Tate served as the Chair for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. These longtime adversaries have been working together as part of the Democracy Defense Foundation, restoring public faith in Wisconsin elections. Van Hollen and Tate will be at the Mauthe Center on September 16, where they will be joined by Professor Charles Franklin, Professor of Law and Public Policy at Marquette University, and Director of the Marquette Law School Poll, widely regarded as one of the most accurate and trusted political polls in America. Also on the panel will be Carey Danen, City Clerk of De Pere, and Cami Rapson of WBAY, who will serve as host and moderator. Some of the questions to be addressed in this discussion include: How do Americans view America? Are they optimistic? How do people view the Republican and Democratic parties? How has social media and "slanted" media changed civil discourse? How is political polarization affecting elections? What do Americans believe about voting systems and election security? How can we establish greater trust with the voting process and the results? How can we cultivate civil discourse? What do we seek common ground, and what are the consequences if we don't find it? This program will be broadcast live on WBAY Channel 2, and it will be recorded. Register here to join our live audience at the Mauthe Center.
