Over the past two decades, ICFS at Proctors has attempted to present both newly rediscovered gems and restorations of fondly remembered favorites. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of specialty collector labels like Criterion, Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, Something Weird, Arrow, and an ever-growing number of others who have been lovingly dedicating themselves to rescuing and preserving eclectic catalogues of our essential cinematic culture. Whether beloved classics or not, these companies give each release — the good, the bad, and the weird — incredible respect, packing them with commentaries, essays, and thick printed monographs offering analysis and contextualization. Niche U.S. film distributors like Janus, Kino-Lorber, and the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA), then make these films available to independent theatres like ours.
Director Ryan Levey traces the passion for film collecting back to those who advertised their interest in buying, selling, and trading rare bootleg VHS in the back of specialized film magazines. He succeeds in capturing fun, fascinating, and important interviews with filmmakers, actors, collectors, historians, and representatives of some of above noted labels (among those interviewed are former ICFS guests, filmmaker Scooter McCrae, and film historian Samm Deighan).
"...a joyous documentary love letter to cinephilia.” — Jambika Docs
“The adoration and admiration each interviewee has for motion pictures, and these labels that put out crazy special editions are keenly felt from the first scene to the last... The pacing is quick, and nothing feels repetitious.” – Film Threat
