With his new book, Alan Harrison tosses a virtual brick through the window of the nonprofit arts sector, where elitism and social failure have doomed it to near-irrelevance – and offers real techniques to glaze a stronger window for the sector so that it can achieve the kind of impact that will make itself indispensable to its communities — today, tomorrow, and in years to come.
Seattle, Washington — Changemakers Books, a division of Collective Ink/John Hunt Publishing, has released a new expertly-written trade book for nonprofit arts directors, executives, supporters, staff members, volunteers, and community leaders by Alan Harrison. "SCENE CHANGE: Why Today’s Nonprofit Arts Organizations Have to Stop Producing Art and Start Producing Impact" focuses on ways in which the nonprofit arts sector in America can reverse its steep decline and become essential to their communities in 2024 and beyond.
In his brilliantly unpretentious, snarky, and hilarious style, Alan Harrison pulls no punches. He identifies and addresses elitism, defines and defuses toxicity, and provides outlines for success, including a hopeful prediction for the future. This book also provides context for the pinball journeys of a 30-year adventure, leading nonprofit arts organizations in America -- warts and all.
“Currently, nonprofit arts donors donate so that nonprofit arts donors may attend. Elitism and mismanagement have doomed too many theaters, operas, dance companies, museums, and symphonies to close down. But we can use art as a tool to solve or mitigate our communities’ most pressing problems. We just have to want to. And, we need to the right arrows in our quiver to replace ‘art for art’s sake’ with ‘art for the sake of the community.’ That’s the ammunition that this book provides.” – Alan Harrison
“Alan Harrison’s Scene Change is not only a must-read for arts administrators and fundraisers, it’s a must-read for donors, board members, and anyone interested in the performing arts.”
– Lisa Z. Greer, Author, Philanthropy Revolution
On Saturday, February 10, Seattle acting legend Allen FItzpatrick will interview Alan Harrison about this new, funny, and audacious call to action to save the nonprofit arts community. The event is free to the public and a book signing will occur immediately after the interview.
Please note: at this point, there is no event scheduled for Climate Pledge Arena on February 10, so parking should be ample. The book signing will start just after the afternoon performance of Seattle Rep's "Quixote Nuevo" on the Bagley Wright Theatre stage and will conclude approximately one hour before the evening performance begins at 7:30.
