Book signing for "Webster Groves Walking Tour" set for Sat, June 6 at Jefferson Barracks Park

People drawn to Webster Groves by Webster University; the Opera Theatre or “the Rep”; the community’s schools, churches, parks, and restaurants; or just passing through have undoubtedly been struck by the charming old houses tucked away on those leafy avenues. As the casual observer may suspect, there is history in those homes! In "Webster Groves: A Walk through History", you’ll get an introduction to the stories behind the development of one of St. Louis County’s oldest suburbs from author Steve Schoenbeck, a retired attorney and longtime Webster Groves resident. The seven walks detailed in this book cover the length and breadth of the city. On one of the walks, you’ll see the “old rock building,” the original Webster Academy for Boys that gave a name to the fledgling community; on another, you’ll see the home of the Missouri governor whose election put an end to the notorious Pendergast machine. You’ll see the home built in the mid-19th century by a man who got his start clerking for Robert Campbell on the St. Louis riverfront, you’ll see homes built by the renowned St. Louis architects William S. Eames and Thomas Young, and you’ll see the home on Plant Avenue that Gordon Jenkins left in his late teens to find fame as a Grammy-winning arranger in New York and Hollywood.
