The FFAPL Education Program, Seven Branches lecture series, presents a book review talk about Nature's Evil: A Cultural History of Natural Resources, a book by the noted historian and cultural scientist Alexander Etkind. The talk will be given by Jonathan Skinner of the Friends & Foundation of the Albany Public Library (FFAPL).
The leading characters in this book include peat and hemp, sugar and iron, cod and oil. A long section discusses our ideas about them and our use of them. How does evil enter the picture? When a European put sugar in his coffee in 1775, was he in effect drinking the blood of Caribbean slaves? How have natural resources shaped our lives?
