Boo the Flu

Sendero Health Plans’ annual ‘Boo the Flu’ event is back—the easiest way for Central Texas families to stay healthy ahead of the holidays! In its 13th year as the lifetime sponsor, Sendero, along with Austin Public Health, Allison Elementary, and dozens of partners will be on site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 at Allison Elementary, 515 Vargas Rd. Boo the Flu has become a tradition in East Austin and a legacy community event for the whole family, providing free flu vaccines to anyone who lacks insurance or has limited coverage—no ID or proof of residency required. According to Austin Public Health, Boo the Flu is one of the most successful vaccine distribution events in the community every year. The CDC recommends getting flu shots by the end of October for ages 6 months and older, and Sendero is here to ensure families are protected well before saying, “trick or treat!” “As a nonprofit, community-connected health plan, we’re committed to meeting people where they are and giving them the resources to stay healthy,” says Sharon Alvis, CEO of Sendero Health Plans. “‘Boo the Flu’ brings fun and peace of mind to the community, ensuring everyone is protected, whether they’re members or not.” Beyond flu shots, the festivities at Allison Elementary will feature entertainment, raffles, and over 30 partners offering valuable community resources including vision screenings, utility assistance, and CPR demos. Plus, 300 food boxes from the Central Texas Food Bank will be distributed to support local families. “We’re all about breaking down barriers to healthcare at Sendero,” says Rudy Ybarra, Director of Business Development. “Whether it’s free vaccines, no complicated paperwork, or access to vital resources, our goal is to make it easy and fun for everyone to access what they need to be their best, healthiest selves.”
