The UDC College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) is offering a certificate program in biointensive agriculture at its Firebird Research Farm in Beltsville, Maryland.
In this two-day, 15-hour course, you'll learn:
* soil preparation
* starting seeds and seedlings
* planting using the biointensive method
* cultivating and maintaining healthy plants
* harvesting, storage and planting for the next season
* crop production from a seasonal extension perspective
When: Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Cost: $150
Who should attend: This course is ideal for anyone interested in growing their own food, starting a garden, or exploring farming as a career, especially residents of Maryland, Virginia or D.C. who want to learn sustainable, small-scale farming practices. All experience levels are welcome, no prior farming background is required, just a passion for learning and growing.

About the instructor: Dr. Lavell Merritt, Jr. is a vegetable and small livestock farmer. He has been a food producer for 30 years, including managing farms in the District, Maryland, Texas and Ethiopia. His efforts have fed hundreds of families from every income scale. He has operated farmers' markets, consumer supported agriculture (CSA) programs, agriculture education programs, restaurants, university dining services and countless training opportunities for beginning and young farmers.
