Berkshire Bach presents Bach's ST. JOHN PASSION

Berkshire Bach presents J.S. Bach’s masterwork, ST. JOHN PASSION, on Sunday, April 12, 3pm, at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. Distinguished BBS Director of Choral Music and Principal Conductor James Bagwell leads soloists, chorus, and the Berkshire Bach Ensemble in the group's first performance of the work since 1995. Tenor Gene Stenger is The Evangelist and joins professional Soloists, Chorus, and The Berkshire Bach Ensemble, Eugene Drucker concertmaster for this performance. ST. JOHN is Bach’s earliest surviving passion. It is faster paced and more dramatic than the larger St. Matthew Passion and borrows stylistically from Italian opera to bring an immediacy and personal feel to the setting that revolutionized church music in Leipzig. ST. JOHN PASSION is the work that established Bach’s reputation in his first Eastertide in the city and demonstrated that he was a force to be reckoned with. It is also the work that convinced conductor James Bagwell to pursue a career in music rather than law. Come hear the power and brilliance of Bach’s masterpiece and see why it has captivated audiences and musicians since its first performance in 1724.
