The Benicia – Vallejo American branch of the Association of University Women (AAUW), will host a dinner and program at 6 pm Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the Union Hotel, 401 1st Street, in Benicia. The featured speaker will be Ruben Aurelio, superintendent for Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD). He will discuss how changes at the federal level are affecting local schools.
The meeting is open to the public. A $30 dinner includes either pasta or a chicken Caesar salad, soda or ice tea, a dessert and tip. Cash is requested. Those interested in attending are asked to text a positive RSVP to 707-747-5112 by Mar. 2. Seating is limited.
Aurelio’s presentation may cover a variety of topics, such as: with the demolition of the U.S. Department of Education, where will support for special education and student health and welfare coming from? Have there been calls for banning books or teaching fake history? Do changes in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) laws affect local schools? What about Title One school funding? Is ICE enforcement coming near our schools?
These changes will affect student lives for years to come. Attendees can find out how federal changes are hitting home and what they can do to help local students.
There will be a question and answer forum following the presentation.
Aurelio became superintendent of VCUSD on July, 2024. Before that, he served as the superintendent of the St. Helena Unified School District. He is a native of Los Angeles and the son of immigrant parents from Argentina. He is a proud first-generation college graduate, earning his bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree from California State University, East Bay. He also holds certification as a chief business official.
AAUW founded in 1881, is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. Membership is open to any graduate with an associate or equivalent, Baccalaureate or higher degree. Undergraduates qualify as student affiliates with full branch participation.
The local Benicia-Vallejo AAUW Branch is an active group of equity advocates. Group activities include a variety of opportunities: educational, social, cultural, and public policy related. Since 1998, branch activities have raised scholarship funds for a local project called Tech Trek. This program provides a one-week hands-on math and science camp for selected 7th grade girls that is held at a nearby university campus.
AAUW has a nationwide network of 170,000 members and supporters, 1,000 local branches, and 800 college and university partners. For further information or to join the branch visit https://beniciavallejo-ca.aauw.net/membership/ or send an email to [email protected] .
