Composed in 1727, Bach’s masterpiece is scored for solo voices, double choir, “ripieno” chorus, and double orchestra with libretto by Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander). The St. Matthew Passion tells the story of the last days of Jesus, according to the Gospel of Matthew. In this well-known story, Jesus is betrayed, tried, crucified, and then buried.
