Author Talk with Chris Boucher - Harry "Bucky" Lew: Basketball's First Black Professional Player
Harry "Bucky" Lew broke professional basketball's color barrier in 1902 and went on to become the first Black player, coach, manager, referee, and franchise owner in otherwise white leagues. Though widely recognized in his lifetime, his pioneering contributions have largely been overlooked. This biography chronicles his groundbreaking career and enduring impact on the integration of American sports. Lew played against the New Bedford Whalers, one of the premier teams in the New England League, multiple times in 1904. He later returned to the city in 1922 as coach of Lowell Textile (now UMass Lowell) for a game against New Bedford Textile (now UMass Dartmouth).
