Dr. Sam Kidder will discuss his latest book, Our First Glimpse of Japan, which shows how the visits to Japan by four prominent Americans in the 1870s, including President Ulysses S. Grant, set the stage for America’s engagement with Japan, often referred to as “the most important bilateral relationship in the world.”
Dr. Kidder earned a PhD in East Asian Studies. He served as Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the US Embassy in Tokyo from 1995 to 2000, Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo from 2006 to 2014, and is currently Managing Director of Fukuda Editorial Services, Tokyo and Pittsburgh.
