As an archeologist, he now focuses on modern border issues, using research to explore the impacts of U.S immigration policies. His books The Land of Open Graves (2015) and Soldiers and Kings (2024) examine the deadly effects of border enforcement and human smuggling. Soldiers and Kings is a finalist for the 2024 National Book Award in Nonfiction.
