A profound masterpiece from one of the most revered filmmakers in the history of cinema, Robert Bresson’s AU HASARD BALTHAZAR follows the donkey Balthazar as he is passed from owner to owner, some kind and some cruel but all with motivations beyond his understanding. This precise, elliptical tale contains such plenitude — in its steady accumulation of incident, characters, mystery, and social detail, its implicative use of sound, space, and editing — that Jean-Luc Godard famously claimed that it's "the world in an hour and a half."
Bresson parallels the mistreatment and downfall of two innocents: a young farmer's daughter (Anne Wiazemsky) who is seduced by the leader of a group of black-jacketed delinquents; and the Christ-like Balthazar, a donkey suffering the many sins of humankind who, despite his powerlessness, accepts his fate nobly. Through Bresson’s unconventional approach, BALTHAZAR becomes an exquisitely moving parable about purity and transcendence.
"No film I have ever seen has come so close to convulsing my entire being as AU HASARD BALTHAZAR. It stands by itself as one of the loftiest pinnacles of artistically realized emotional experiences." - Andrew Sarris
