Astor Street Walking Tour

Explore Chicago's Astor Street with the Society of Architectural Historians and the Charnley-Persky House Museum. Immerse yourself in the history and residential architecture of Chicago's magnificent Gold Coast as you are introduced to the story of one of Chicago's most famous happenings—the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. On a walking tour of this beautiful and affluent neighborhood, fourth-generation Chicagoan Sally Sexton Kalmbach will treat you to tales about the famous residents who had such an impact on the Exposition held in Chicago’s Jackson Park. Hear stories of the architects who designed Exposition buildings as well as Gold Coast homes—Richard Morris Hunt, S.S. Beman, Charles McKim, Henry Ives Cobb, and Louis Sullivan. Visit sites where influential committee members resided and entertained during this important historical period. You’ll go inside the Charnley-Persky House (1891–1892), designed by Louis Sullivan while Frank Lloyd Wright was working as his chief draftsman, and learn why this National Historic Landmark is so unique. The tour will be followed by a short reception at the Charnley-Persky House.
