Artist Talk: Celebrating AAPI Voices
Please join us on Sunday, June 2 from 3 - 4:30 pm in our gallery for an artist talk which will be moderated by Naz Cuguoglu, the Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum. Artists Michael Arcega, Masako Miki, Rupy C. Tut, Xiaoze Xie, Stella Zhang, and ZHENG Chongbin will share with us about their art practice.
Our current group exhibition All Together Now: Celebrating AAPI Voices in Contemporary Art features the work of 14 exceptional Asian-American artists. Working in a diverse array of media and exploring a variety of themes and ideas, these 14 artists exemplify the wealth and breadth of talent among contemporary Asian-American artists.
Naz Cuguoglu, moderator for the panel discussion, is the Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Asian Art Museum. Originally from Istanbul, she has curated exhibitions and programs internationally at documenta fifteen, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, the 15th Istanbul Biennial, the Wattis institute, and more. She previously held positions at KADIST, the de Young Museum, and SFMOMA. She edited and contributed to numerous exhibition catalogs; her writings were featured in SFMOMA Open Space, Art Asia Pacific, Hyperallergic, and Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art. In 2024, she was awarded the Andy Warhol Foundation’s Curatorial Research fellowship.
Masako Miki (b. 1973 Osaka, Japan) has exhibited her immersive felt sculptural installations and watercolor works on paper at institutions including the de Young Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, and Pacific Film Archive. Miki was a recipient of the 2018 Inga Maren Otto Fellowship Award from Watermill Center in New York, and has also been a resident artist at the de Young Museum and Facebook HQ. Her work is in collections at SFMOMA, Byrd Hoffman Water Mill Foundation, Colección Solo in Spain, and others.
Michael Arcega (b. 1973, Manila, Philippines) is a San Francisco-based interdisciplinary artist and an Associate Professor at San Francisco State University. His creative research is a poetic investigation around power dynamics and marginalized communities, and he uses object-metaphors to make sculptures, installations, and activations that critique historic and political narratives. Arcega was a finalist in the 2024 SECA Art Award. His work has also been exhibited at venues including the Asian Art Museum, the de Young Museum, the Asia Society in New York, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Orange County Museum of Art. He holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Stanford University, and maintains a studio in San Francisco.
Rupy C. Tut (b. 1985, Chandigarh, India) is a painter dissecting historical and contemporary displacement narratives around identity, belonging, and gender. Tut is a winner of the 2024 SECA Art Award, and her work has been presented at the de Young Museum, Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Institute of Contemporary Art in San Francisco, Berkeley Art Center, London City Hall, Stanford University, and more. Tut’s work is in the permanent collection of the Asian Art Museum, de Young Museum, Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, and the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis.
Stella Zhang (b. 1965, Beijing, China) received her BFA at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and MFA at Tokyo Art University. Zhang’s work has been exhibited throughout Asia and the US, and is in the collections of the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, the Xinxiang Museum in Henan, Tan Shin Fine Arts Museum in Tokyo, and others. Zhang has been an Artist in Residence at Stanford University and is a guest lecturer at Stanford and UC Berkeley.
Xiaoze Xie (b. 1966, Guangdong Province, China) is an internationally recognized artist and the Paul L. and Phyllis Wattis Professor of Art at Stanford University. Xie received his MFA degrees from the Central Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing and the University of North Texas. Xie has exhibited extensively in the US and internationally. His recent solo exhibitions include shows at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Asia Society Museum in New York, and the Denver Art Museum. His work is in the permanent collection of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, San Jose Museum of Art, and more.
ZHENG Chongbin (b. 1961, Shanghai, China) is internationally recognised for his multimedia works, ranging from Chinese ink and acrylic paintings to Light and Space installations. Recent exhibitions include shows at the Asian Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Hong Kong Museum of Art, and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, British Museum, Asian Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and others.
