Jack Levine was a Social Realist, but his virtuosic style was indebted to Chaim Soutine and the German Expressionists. The young artist was described as the "Dazzling Newcomer" by Art Digest during the 1930s. Yet later the artist struggled to maintain a social and critical stance during the postwar rise of abstraction and the defeat of the politically engaged artistic Left.
Dr. Dennis Raverty, award-winning teacher and art historian will be presenting this lecture and discussion about Jack Levine & the Politics of Criticism based on his research as well as his personal interview with Mr. Levine when the artist was in his nineties.
