Why do people feel compelled to share stories? Why do we yearn to reach others with our words, beyond necessary communication? Storytelling is a vital facet of human culture and is constantly expanding as we create new ways to communicate through words, art, and tangible experience.
In their annual literary and storytelling series, The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Washington explores both written and spoken story as a vehicle to transmit power, transport audiences, impart wisdom, and outlast individual experiences. Sacred Breath features indigenous writers and storytellers sharing their craft through both forms: literature as a means of preservation of experience and ideals; and oral storytelling as a form of spiritual connection, a sharing of sacred breath.
Featured multidisciplinary artist Arigon Starr joins the presentation, integrating music and art to immerse audiences in stories and reveal the power of presence.
