An Irish Siamsa (An Irish Evening of Entertainment)
Known in Ireland as a Siamsa (Shee-am-sah), it includes traditional cultural music, dancing, and historical stories. Please join us in commemorating the city of Rochester’s and county of Monroe’s declaration of Irish American Heritage Month while enjoying some traditional soda bread.
6:00-6:15 pm Soda Bread Making Demonstration - Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians – LAOH member Sandy Foley. A traditional loaf of Irish soda bread will be assembled and baked so you can learn to make your own.
6:15-6:45 Traditional Irish Music Session - Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (Irish Musician Association). Several members of the music organization will play some traditional Irish music.
6:45-7:15 Historical Presentation or Story - IACI past President Mike McCarthy. The Irish and the Erie Canal. As the Erie Canal neared completion, the final push was to make the Deep Cut through the Niagara Escarpment. This presentation will examine the difficulties the engineers faced and how the Irish laborers contributed in making the nearly impossible task a reality.
7:15-7:30 Irish Step Dance Demonstration - Kathy Whitfield, owner and instructor at Rince Na Saor Irish Dancing will compare modern and traditional Irish step dancing called Sean Nós.
7:30 Conclusion of the program and soda bread tasting.
