As opposed to presenting American art as a linear history, the exhibition is organized around themes of “Identity, Belonging, Belief, and Making,” and places artists including John Singer Sargent, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, and Mickalene Thomas in conversation across generations. A group of diverse community members will also contribute their own narratives and responses to the art on view throughout the course of the exhibition, which will be accompanied by several public programs, details of which are forthcoming.
