On Saturday, March 28 at 10:30 a.m., Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe will collaborate with The Bay Sarasota (1055 Blvd. of the Arts, Sarasota) to present a free performance of a child-friendly Rhythm & Tales show, “Alligators & Flamingos.” This show tells the story of Herbert, an alligator who wants ONLY alligators to be able to swim in Lodi Swamp, but Terry the flamingo doesn’t believe that’s fair. In this musical adventure, Terry and friends will teach Herbert and his friends a thing or two about acceptance. The inspiration for this story is taken from Sarasota history: on October 3, 1955, 100 African American residents drove to Lido Beach in defiance of Jim Crow laws; additional caravans and “wade-ins” took place for several years in protest of beach segregation. It was a struggle but finally, after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, local facilities, restaurants and the beaches were fully integrated. WBTT’s Rhythm & Tales program comprises several age-appropriate shows that teach valuable lessons while offering area students – many of whom may not have regular access to arts experience – high-quality theatrical entertainment. These productions feature WBTT professional artists. While entry is free, advance registration is requested – visit thebaysarasota.org/event/westcoast-black-theatre-troupe-alligators-flamingos to register.
