ALLEGRA BICK-MAURISCHAT –SHIFT AND SHAPE: HISTORICAL EXAMINATIONS IN PAPER AND PENCIL
Allegra is a Bay Area-born artist whose practice is grounded in drawing, but spans painting, cyanotype, and paper-weaving. Her work is concerned with history and ephemera, and considers the importance of visual documentation, reproduction, and the act of looking. Allegra lives and works in Boulder Creek, CA.
This show will feature Allegra's graphite drawings "Quiltscapes". These drawings were inspired by her visit the South. She renders these landscapes by hand in graphite pencil, but decontextualized each image within the shape of various Civil War-era quilting squares. Be sure to see her powerful paper weavings that depict portraits of women who fought in the Civil War disguised as men.
