Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin was dubbed the grand magician by 18th century art critics. Arguably, one of the greatest still life painters, the Rembrandt of still life. He was famous for his technical mastery in painting still life subjects that documented the life of the Paris bourgeoisie in the 18th century. Basket of Peaches with Walnuts, Knife and Glass of Wine is characterized by Chardin’s subdued colors, mellow lighting, and uncanny realistic textures.
In this class, we will become familiar with Chardin’s technical skills and practice using his layered brushstrokes to evoke texture, to capture the translucence of wine in a glass, the downy flesh of peaches, and the chiaroscuro of a very Baroque-like canvas. Produce your own expression of Basket of Peaches with Walnuts, Knife and Glass of Wine in a modern context by building on traditional painting techniques.
