Jan Davidsz. de Heem is one of the most important 17th-century Dutch still-life painters. Born in Utrecht in 1606, he was a mediator between Dutch and Flemish art. He combines Dutch restraint in composition and coloring with strong Flemish colors and exuberant and lush picture arrangements. In the table presented here, a delicately graduated palette of gray-brown and green tints with the yellow accent of a lemon are typical of Dutch painting.
